Erinvale Golf Club

Designed by Gary Player, the beautifully manicured championship course at Erinvale boasts some of the country’s most challenging and spectacular holes. In 1996 it was the venue for the World Cup of Golf.  Erinvale is a popular course for South Africa Golf Holidays, and can be reached easily from central Cape Town or the Winelands.

The demanding front nine meanders through park-like terrain, with the holes running in generous playing corridors through the residential estate. There are a number of man-made water features on various holes which add to the challenge.

On the back nine, the land climbs and falls dramatically and one seldom has the luxury of a level lie, as the course winds it’s way around the foothills of the Helderberg mountains, with panoramic views of False Bay in the distance. There’s scarcely an ordinary hole on the course, but the par five 13th which falls away dramatically and the par three 14th across water will linger in the memory.

The layout features unusual bunkering, some traps having a deep ‘pot-bunker’ character, while others have railway sleepers radiating outwards to unique effect. Hit one of these by accident and watch as your ball is catapulted across the fairway in the opposite direction!

This is a busy member’s course and it can sometimes be difficult to get a round for overseas visitors wanting to play Erinvale. With a little flexibility it can be achieved! We recommend a golf cart for the course but it can be quite a slow round.

Erinvale is about an hour’s drive from central Cape Town, so we normally recommend playing there if you are staying in one of the Winelands hotels in nearby Stellenbosch or Franschhoek.
