Steenberg is an exclusive wine estate, hotel and golf course set in the Constantia Winelands close to central Cape Town. It is one of our most popular destinations for South Africa golf holidays. It is possible to base yourself at the Steenberg Hotel or play the course as part of a golfing holiday in Cape Town.
Designed by Peter Matkovich, the golf course takes full advantage of the natural features and hazards of the Constantia Valley. The 18-hole championship golf course meanders though the vineyards, pine forests and gentle waterways. Man made streams wind through the course, bisecting fairways or flanking the holes. Add to that the massive ‘waste bunkers’, sometimes you have no choice but to either lay-up or try to find an extra few yards on your shots.
The course features three distinct areas: Wetlands, Parklands and Fynbos. The first six holes of the course meander through gentle, manicured parkland with some tee shots played off raised tee boxes amongst the vines. The fairways are flanked by private homes which can be a little intimidating. For this reason every visiting four ball is required to have a caddie, to ensure that you do not cross into private gardens inadvertently to retrieve wayward golf balls.
The course then moves into the wetlands, which includes the testing par 3, 7th hole played to a green surrounded by water. The heathland section features white sand expanses creating ‘islands’ of the fairways. These massive waste bunkers can be treated as fairway as you are allowed to ground your club but can prove tricky to get your shot away cleanly.
The 14th is another par 3 but this time virtually surrounded by bunkers. Supposedly the biggest green in Africa, but an accurate tee shot is still critical as there is plenty of trouble on either side.
The round is completed under the splendour of stately oaks that flank the fairways back towards the clubhouse. The 18th green is surrounded by water and a gaggle of ever present Egyptian geese.
The practice facilities, including a driving range, are just across from the pro shop and adjacent to the 1st tee.
Two minutes walk from the clubhouse is the Steenberg Hotel, a 5* property that has been developed from the original building of what is one of Cape Town’s oldest farms. It offers two excellent restaurants for lunch or dinner after your round.
Steenberg Golf Course can easily be played from accommodation in central Cape Town as well, and is included in our Luxury Cape Town Golf Holiday itinerary.

Reviews
The course has undergone some much needed renovation with new drainage solving the problem of seasonal winter water-logging. The fairways have recovered completely and the greens revived.Call Us
