Mauritius is famous for its idyllic white sand beaches that encircle the island. As a result it is a popular winter sun and honeymoon destination for visitors from across the world but especially Europe. Accommodation is mostly 5* with the large chain hotels occupying most of the prime beach front locations.
Location is one of the most important factors in choosing a hotel with the west coast hotels that are sheltered from the Indian Ocean the most popular.
North Coast Hotels, Mauritius
Known for its warm temperature throughout the year the northern region of the island, especially Grand Baie (Grand Bay) is a lively tourist spot, with bustling night-life, amazing coastal beaches, and a wide range of restaurants that offer a chance to sample the local dishes.
The 3 km stretch of sublime white sandy beach, emerald blue shallow, reef-protected water is backed by casuarina trees and makes a nice change from the confines of the resort hotels. There are 2 golf centres in the vicinity but for anyone wanting a golf holiday in Mauritius we would recommend staying further south.
West Coast Hotels, Mauritius
The sheltered waters of the west coast offer amazing diving and visibility in the calm waters. The capital city of Port Louis is located to the north of the coastline which is home to the famous Pamplemousse Botanical Gardens. For golfers, there is the Tamarina Golf Club located in the 4* Tamarina Spa and Hotel Resort.
East Coast Hotels, Mauritius
In the breezier Eastern Coast of Mauritius lies the popular tourist areas, the Belle Mare Plage, known as one of the island’s most beautiful talcum sand beaches. The Constance Belle Mare Plage has 2 golf courses which are available to guests at a nominal fee. Slightly further south are two of the islands most famous golf resorts, the Four Seasons Resort at Anahita and the Shangri-La Le Tousserok Hotel which is home to the Ille aux Cerfs course.
Just about an hour’s drive from the airport, this stretch of the coast is popular all year round due to its splendid beaches, top-end resorts and villas. There is also a lesser known attraction known as the Bras d’Eau National Park where you can go for a nature walk.
Owning to its windy weather, activities such as kite surf is widely practiced. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy deep-sea fishing for tuna, marlin and mako shark which are pretty much popular in this eastern part.
South Coast Hotels, Mauritius
If you are seeking a relaxing, secluded and tranquil holiday, then the Southern Coast of Mauritius is where you need to be. Le Morne will leave you in awe with its scenic views of the beaches, tropical lush green vegetations, and local rustic fishing villages.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural and historical legacy, the majestic Le Morne Brabant which is the emblem of the area, is located at the extreme south western tip of the island. The outcrop has a summit of 556 metres (1,824 ft) above sea level which can be seen from miles away.
The popular Heritage Bel Ombre Resort sits along the western edge of the south coast and offers a 27 hole golf complex with an 18 hole championship course and a 9 hole par 3 course.
Most of the hotels offer all inclusive style packages which include all meals, local drinks (including alcohol) and some of the activities available, usually non motorised water sports. These all inclusive or full board packages are perfect for anyone that prefers to stay mostly inside the resort, making the location of the hotel less important. The emphasis is more on the hotel facilities, the rooms, food, and the hotel entertainment programs.
However, if you prefer to explore and sample local nightlife and sights, then it becomes more important to consider the location of your hotel in regard to facilities such as the beach, shopping areas, restaurants, pubs, night clubs, sightseeing tours, golfing, adventure activities, and access to public transportation (unless you plan to rent a car/ use taxis).
