Andersson's Camp, Ongava Reserve

Located on the edge of the Etosha National Park and inside the Ongava Private Reserve is a family friendly safari lodge offering good value accommodation and exceptional game viewing.

Once a working farmstead the main building has been sympathetically converted into a safari lodge with a large shady verandah that overlooks a waterhole. Meals are served here, either in the dining room or outside and there is a small but welcome swimming pool close by.  A sheltered walkway leads off to an underground hide, where guests can sit and watch animals come to the flood lit watering hole.

The 20 guest eco-friendly units are built on stilts and are accessed by a raised walkway. The canvas and wooden constructions do not have air conditioning but have large patio doors, mosquito nets and fans.
The bathrooms are best described as 'rustic' with a large shower which flows into an old tin tub that doubles as a shower tray! There is a modern flushing toilet and sink but overall it is quite a tight fit.  If you like your creature comforts this isn't the lodge for you.

Family rooms are available, these are two rooms which are adjoined across a private deck but the rooms are separated, so won't suit very young children and parents.

Meals have a wonderful home-cooked feel with fresh salads at lunch time and three course dinners. It is possible to stay on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis instead of the fully inclusive package, but this does include game drives and is recommended.

Game Viewing
Game drives are conducted on the same reserve as Ongava Lodge. The reserve is home to the Big 5 animals with both Black and White rhino. The vehicles have canvas roofs to shade from the sun, and carry refreshments for coffee or sun downers in the evening. There are plentiful sightings of lions.

In our opinion:
This lodge is more informal than the neighbouring Ongava Lodge and better suited to families, but facilities are more rustic. Some guests struggle with the lack of air conditioning and it is advisable to check night time temperatures before choosing the lodge as it can be uncomfortably hot with just a fan. That said we loved the food and the game viewing is every bit as good as paying more for staying the more upmarket lodge.
